A Book Every Parent and Caregiver Should Read

I received this book as a free gift from the hospital where I gave birth to my daughter. I began reading it when she turned six months old. If I had the money to do so, I'd buy hundreds of these books and hand them out to everyone I know and meet! I have an 18 year old daughter in college and a six month old daughter and I've got to admit - I wish I had this valuable resource years ago! This book goes a long way in explaining why society is the way it is today. We are simply not taking enough time and effort in raising our little ones to be strong, smart, caring, independent people. As quoted in the book, "For these are all our children...We will all profit by, or pay for, whatever they become." - James Baldwin This book is easy to read with real life situations to apply to your daily life. I am already seeing a difference in the few things I've implemented. For example, I never realized how important it was to verbalize what I was doing. How many of us actually warn our child that we are going to pick them up, move them, change their diaper, etc. - very few of us. We take for granted that the child is a baby - we forget that she/he is a human being that needs verbal cues to know what will happen to us. I can't recommend this book strongly enough to everyone. It was definitely written with new parents in mind. The chapters are very short (most only five pages including illustrations) and explain: 1) the situation 2) the common adult response 3) the conscious adult response 4) why am I doing this 5) conceptual framework 6) common behavior and normal development 7) attitudes that create caring communities 8) skills for conscious everyday responses 9) if you need more All of the above in five short pages! Again, I can't recommend this book strongly enough.
