Dynamic Control Chart by Reinhold Scheck: This is absolutely the best Excel book that I have ever read. Reading it and the examples on the companion CD helped me immeasurably in the further development of the real time control charts that I programmed into Excel for my companies operations. I knew what I wanted to do. But I did not know how to get from what I had, which was two large static 50 data point charts, that the user could not see all at once. To a long chart, with a window view which is, what I wanted. By using Reinhold's methods my charts are now dynamic and have additional powerful tools and visually user friendly features that are helping to make our manufacturing operations world class. Reinhold lays out an excellent systematic method which will make your charts more colorful, more visually appealing and most importantly Dynamic. By applying Reinhold's methods the user will bring their charting to the next level and maybe skip a level or two to break out into new possibilities. The author explains many important aspects of how people visualize things, colors and presentations. Many new tricks and illusions to hide the unwanted parts and bring forth the descriptive parts of the charts are also discussed. He thoroughly explains how to use the two most important excel functions that are required to make charts Dynamic using the Scheck system. Next he describes how these two functions are integrated into his many colorful examples. In some of the examples the pieces are built one at a time to aid the reader in understanding all of the steps involved. Some of his examples even show how to make realistic looking gauges. This is on my list of "What to wow em with next" Reinhold explains how best to integrate and use controls to make charts Dynamic. Such as using spin buttons to change chart type or data series. Or using scroll bars to scroll through a section of the long chart (My personnel favorite), which Reinhold calls the window chart. This is the one that I found the most useful for my work and I'll speak about how it helped me to put visualization into our manufacturing operations for our operators, engineers, management and our customers. Our manufacturing operations may make one roll of product for a customer or 80 rolls of product. With our new Dynamic Control Charts the lead men in our operations can quickly see in vibrant colors how the product that they are producing compares with the customer's specifications and the control limits. All of the people that I work with were very impressed by the Dynamic nature and visually friendly features that are now an everyday part of our Control Charts. Gone are the days when data was first manually penciled onto a piece of paper and then the control limitswere calculated with calculator and formula that were complex for our lead men to, learn and to use. Now our operators key data into their run spreadsheet as they make production. That data is automatically used for several p

This book is good, but quite complicated if you are not an experienced Excel 2007 user. If you want impressive dynamic charts, though, the book is a great resource. Changes on the fly save time and extra work when working with charts. The book is a bit long and covers complicated processes in Excel 2007 for the average user. The material is extensive and the examples are good. The reading is a bit on the dry side at times, but Excel is not necessarily the most exciting subject for many information workers. However, if you love Excel 2007, this book provides valuable insight into complex features of the application. Various processes for dynamic content are presented in detail and push the reader to go beyond simple tasks and use the true power behind Microsoft's Excel 2007. If you need to create spreadsheets that provide dynamic content through multiple applications, this book is a winner! As a Microsoft Certified Trainer, I look at books as resources for specific tasks. This book delivers. I would have liked to know that the presentation method is drawn out and has extensive examples. I personally like a quick reference and examples to make sure I "get it right" based on what I read. This book does the job, but it is long and some areas may not be relevant for many Excel users. The book is useful, but plan on spending some time on the material. The content is very useful and the concepts allow the user to pull the full potential out of Excel for advanced dynamic content. I do recommend this book and think it presents some excellent content, but if you are a beginner with Excel 2007, learn more about the application before going into advanced features presented in this book. With that being said, if you are a good study and grasp content quickly, this is a great book. I would not give this book 5 stars, but it is far from mediocre and is deserving of a high 4 star rating. I do recommend this book and, as a Microsoft Certified Trainer, think the book presents excellent content that I could use and present in a learning environment!
