Pretty good

This is a pretty good review. I wished they had more tests though, two is not quite enough for preparation. I liked the first part of the book where it talks about the qualifications for the tests and the national merit scholarship, however, it should be more detailed. The techniques are useful. I think the problems may be a little on the easier side.

excellent materials

Like all of the Princeton Review's "Cracking the [.....]" study guides, Princeton Review's Cracking the PSAT book offers lots of sound, helpful, and at times quite clever tips for doing well on the exam. However, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to buy any book on the PSAT since the PSAT is simply an abbreviated SAT exam without the essay. Instead, buy the newest edition of Cracking the SAT, which will give you the same excellent preparation materials, and which you are going to need in a few months anyway for taking the regular SAT. Your school will give you a practice PSAT exam to familiarize you with a length and format of the exam, and since this is an official exam put out by the College Board, it will be the most similar to the actual test that you can have.

Not just a blithe Textbook

This book is not only a very effective aid to that PSATs, it's also interesting to read-it both gives you the cold facts you need to know the answers, and provides actually quite counter-intuitive strategies for avoiding mistakes-it shows you techniques for understanding the pitfalls the testwriters put in. For example, the average student will probably attempt to do every problem, even if it means hurrying through and blowing easy porblems. The book shows you, among MANY other things, that there is a pacing you should apply. It gives graphs to show which problems you should do and which are best saved for the end. This could easily bring up the SAT or PSAT grades of any student.

Quick, Concise, and Effective! Two Thumbs Up!

This book was a great help to me in my PSAT prep last summer. My family did a lot of traveling so I was unable to take my school's PSAT/NMSQT prep class; instead I bought this book and read it in the car during my family's road trip. I found the grammar review sections to be particularly helpful to me because I'd forgetten a lot of little things since covering that in my english class. The practice tests also helped me prepare for College Placement Tests the following year.If it makes any difference to you, this was the only preparation I did and I scored a remarkable 224 out of a possible 240 points. The book had its problems. My copy had 2 pages that were almost totally blank; there had been an issue in printing. I also spotted a pretty bad mistake in one of the geometry review examples, but I emailed the publisher about it and it should be fixed in any future editions.I highly recommend this book to anybody who needs a quick, effective review.

Definitely get this book

This book was wonderful--my score from sophomore year to junior year jumped 41 points to score in the top 5% of the nation (I'm waiting on National Merit Semifinalist qualification in the fall). I seriously attribute how well I did on the PSAT to this book. It offers great tips on how to pace yourself depending on what score you're looking for. All in all, this is a great book to get before you take the PSAT for real.
