A return to Tenderness

Years ago, I read Merle Shain's "Some Men Are More Perfect Than Others" and found her writing beautiful and insightful. So it was with delight that I learned of this last book of hers at the same time I heard she had died, though it was many years ago now. "Courage My Love" is beyond SMAMPTO, in that Ms. Shain refines her original feminist thoughts with those of an older and more seasoned woman. She is still a feminist, though in the way most women are feminine and relate to the masculine in men. She is asking us to think about what love means and that it can't be real until we love ourselves and be willing to be vulnerable and not perfect, but just be. She peppers these beliefs with stories of people, including herself, who find or lose love, and possibly themselves, as a result of not understanding what was at work between them. Her writing is unique and very easy to read, though every sentence is thought provoking and I suspect carefully chosen. It is not surprising that her writing is often chosen for quotes. It's too bad we'll never hear from her again, because though I haven't read her for years until now, I have always considered her as a sort of muse through my adult life.

Merle Shain wrote with an illuminated honesty that lit the dark places of all of our lives. Her simple truth and beauty helped me navigate through some rough waters and I would recommend her books to everyone who ever struggled with relationships in any part of their life. She lives on in all of us who loved her lucid and profound writing.

I read this book and it's authenticity, wisdom, and intimacy are beyond compare. No one I know of writes about love like Merle Shain. I read this book thinking she was still alive and when I found out she had already died I cried and I am starting to tear up even as I write this. She is writing with Love and you not only experience love through her words you feel it in your bones. After reading this you will be clear about what your role is in life when it comes to being in a relationship. A gem, a classic, and a gift straight from the heart. I treasure the few copies I have.
