A baen omnibus of the first two heritage universe novels, with the second better than the first. Shaky builders. Not sure I'd want to live on a planet named Quake, really. However, that is where the parties of interest are going this Summertide - the astronomical event that brings two planets close to their sun's orbit. This time, because of a particularly rare alignment, it will be a lot worse than useful. This brings a politician, a keen researcher into the ancient Builder race, a couple of profiteering rogues and some criminals into contact in the start of this series. An ok start only, though. 3 out of 5 It appears a couple of the groups of characters have a history, a pair of rogue 'entrepreneur' parters, a human and an alien, and a group that includes a researcher. Here's another story of the search for ancient alien race technology, and the race themselves, the Builders. This leads to a surprise trip and a nasty revelation that they aren't the only ones there. Throughout the novel there are 'excerpts' from a Galactic Encyclopedia type of publication, or database, that fills you in on the various species, between chapters. The book is a little ordinary at the start - which is possibly also a function of not being familiar with exactly what happened before, but gets much better later on. A 3 for the first part, and a 4 for the later part, if you like. 3.5 out of 5

Interesting.

Convergent Series is diffinenty a thinking man's book. Sheffield writes an amazing trip through the mind, and creates a new level for human thought to expand into.

Strong on science, concept, and plot. The name caught me, and the book didn't disappoint. Sheffield bridges the gap between space opera and hard sci-fi with an excellent grasp of drama, humor and "wow".
