Book Overview

The sole purpose of the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous and the Program, as I know it, is to guide me toward a spiritual contact with God, as I understand him. When that happens, not only will I lose weight, but my desire for food will be taken away.Besides telling his own story, Bill B. goes through the Twelve Steps, one by one. He also includes chapters on topics of real concern to overeaters--abstinence, fear, anger, depression, relationships, money, and switching compulsions. If we are thin, we are not necessarily well, he says, but if we are well--that is, if we feel good about ourselves and like ourselves--we will be thin. We cannot abuse our bodies with too much food if we have respect for ourselves.May Compulsive Overeater, long awaited by those who struggle ceaselessly with the twin problems of overeating and being overweight, guide others to the same weight-loss successes Bill B. has found.

Compulsive Overeater's

I found the book to be absolutely fabulous! It has hit home on so many levels and has given me a lot to think about. It delves deep into your phsyche as does AA which it is founded on those same principles. But, the book is from a guy that has been through it and lives with it everyday. It is his journey through the process and afterwards. Also, I believe that I am building a much stronger relationship with God as I cannot do it alone!

excellent!

I've been in & out of OA for over 2 years, basically just "sampling" the program, but after I read this book, I realize I need to get back into OA for "real". 12 step programs will not work if you work them half-heartedly, and the author really drives that point home in this book. He breifly describes his overeating/dieting days, and the rest of the book he explains each of the 12 steps in ways a person can really understand, sometimes things you don't get from meetings or OA literature. He basically says that if you really have a problem w/ food, then to save your sanity & life, you need to really work the program. This may not be the book for your run-of-the-mill person who diets once in a while, & isn't crazed by food/weight, but if food/bingeing/over-exercising/constant dieting are making you crazy, this book is excellent!

Life Changer

I had no idea what was making me overeat and be miserable. Now I do and it is quite a relief.

Excellent

Although not OA approved literature, it is well worth any OA'er reading. The author states that the BIG BOOK is still the bible, and he reads it often, but his book shows us overeaters the 12 steps from a compulsive overeaters perspective. Something he said helped me to return to program something like its not just another diet program, it's a "save your life program". AMEN
