Volume One is worth the price

Okay, so I'm in the looking/learning stage currently... I ran across this two volume set in a nautical used book shop and decided to give it a chance. Written by editors from Practical Sailor, I was hoping it would not be just another "advertising vehicle" -- you know the sort no doubt.... [If not, may I direct you to the newest version of "Voyaging Under Power" -- you'll understand *immediately* that Beebe's book no longer is an unbiased look at a multitude of vessels, but merely a slick hard-cover 200-page plug for a high-dollar trawler.]In any event, I began my look at this set with a more jaundiced eye than some may have, and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of information in Volume One. It is more than a basic overview of vessels and their attributes. It offers opinions (some contradictory, but quite frankly, I was impressed by the divergent opinions) -- sailors don't always agree, and both the positive and negative aspects of, for instance, keel configuration... well, hearing both sides allows the reader to develop an informed opinion. I liked that.Now, Volume II is merely okay -- it's not that it's so bad, but more that, well, I could have done better... offered more vessels for instance. What it shows in essence is a few pages of an overview about many small sailboats -- these are production models and you'll find sail plans, interior layouts, keel configurations and more for vessels to 42' in length. Nothing impressive, but if you're a total novice this volume will give you a place to start.So, yes, definitely, Volume I is worth the price of the set. Consider Volume II a bonus book -- okay, but nothing more.
