Community meningitis in adults

Community-acquired bacterial meningitis is a real public health problem. It remains a formidable cause of morbidity and mortality, particularly in developing countries, despite advances in diagnostic and therapeutic management. Our aim was to study the epidemiological, clinical and evolutionary aspects of purulent meningitis in adults. Our study was descriptive, retrospective and monocentric over a period of 10 years. We collected 51 cases of community-acquired purulent meningitis. The mean age of the patients was 41 years. Nearly half the patients (49%, 25 patients) were between 25 and 49 years of age, with a predominance of males. At least one pathological history was noted in 69% of patients. Fever was the main symptom in 98% of patients. Cerebrospinal fluid culture was positive in 32% of cases, and the germ most frequently isolated was S.pneumoniae. The mortality rate was 8%.
