Communicative Deficits Between Persons With Dementia of Alzheimers Type (DAT) & Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI)

Dementia is a neurodegenerative disease that is characterized by a decline in cognitive skills and affects an individual's independence in performing activities of daily living. The incidence and prevalence studies strongly highlight the fact that dementia is going to become a global epidemic in the coming decades. Dementia can lead to considerable health care costs as well as caregiver burden, making it a public health priority. The process of dementia starts many years before the development of clinical symptoms with a condition termed as Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). Studies have reported that persons suffering from MCI eventually progress into dementia. In the recent past, researchers and clinicians are exploring tools for the early identification of MCI due to its high susceptibility to develop into Dementia of Alzheimer's type (DAT). The majority of the studies have used neuro-imaging methods and blood-based biomarkers for the early identification of MCI. However, most of these early screening methods are highly expensive, and invasive and are available only in urban cities. Moving on to less expensive and non-invasive techniques, recently researchers have found certain early communicative deficits in terms of speech, language, and cognitive measures in persons with MCI which can serve as early markers. However, limited studies are done investigating the early cognitive communicative deficits in persons with MCI.
