COMFORT ME WITH APPLES by Catherynne M. Valente What a strange novella! This is a feminist, horror/fantasy retelling of Adam and Eve with a little Stepford Wives and Bluebeard thrown in. If you’re uptight you probably wouldn’t care for this one bit. However, it’s a clever twist on the biblical fairytale. The true horror (for me) is Arcadia Gardens itself; an upscale, luxurious gated community with a hella strict HOA? Yeah, no thank you! Poor, picture perfect Sophia was just trying her best, but she deserved better than her mediocre consort. Lots of purple prose, gaslighting, misogyny, murder, and apples! I enjoyed the quiet creepiness of it. Rating: 4/5 ⭐️
