This study, a revised and improved edition of the paper published earlier this year, aims to provide an in-depth, interdisciplinary analysis of the complex relationship between social cohesion and development processes, with a focus on border regions in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). The study was carried out as part of the Jean Monnet Module 'Solidarity, cohesion and social support in border regions in Central and Eastern Europe - EUCOS' and combines theoretical approaches from sociology, political economy and public policy with an empirical analysis of European policies and the specific experiences of CEE states. The study demonstrates that cohesive societies are more resilient to economic shocks, better able to implement difficult reforms and to sustain inclusive and sustainable economic development. However, although the EU's cohesion policy has contributed significantly to the modernisation of infrastructure and institutions in border regions, convergence in these CEE areas remains incomplete, territorial disparities persist, and historical and institutional factors give rise to significant variations between these areas.
