Book Overview

Cutting-edge and "big-picture" in perspective, this popular introduction to cognitive development focuses on both the fascinating nature of children's thinking and the excitement and change in work in this area. Using an integrated topical approach, it explores the developmental aspects of social cognition, perception, memory, and language. Theoretically balanced, it considers the full spectrum of approaches--from Piaget's developmental stages, to information-processing (including connectionism), dynamic systems, contextual, theory-change, neo-Piagetian, evolutionary, neuroscience, and constraint approaches. Infant Perception. Infant Cognition. Representation and Concepts. Reasoning and Problem Solving. Social Cognition/Theory of Mind. Memory. Language. For anyone interested in child development, including parents, students, and those in psychology, social work, education, etc.

An excellent text on cognitive development, clear and to the point.

I am a personal growth coach who studied in the areas of biology, biochemistry, physiology and psychology. I am familiar with neuroanatomy and the deeper workings of the brain. I also work one-to-one with clients and do public speaking on a variety of topics. Therefore, it is important for me to have a good understanding of development, especially cognitive development. I have looked at a lot of books in this area and I find this to be one of the best general texts. The material is presented clearly and is easy to understand. While it has meaty concepts, they are delivered in a highly digestible form. If you want to understand how the mind develops over time as a child ages, this is a good anchor book to have in your library. I also recommend the DEVELOPING MIND by Daniel Siegel. This is complimentary to this text and more up to date in many respects. It also brings in more neuroscience and less emphasis on cognition as such.

Expensive and difficult, but rewarding!

This is my text book for Developmental Cognitive Psychology. Many of the references are within a few years of publication, but it also doesn't neglect Piaget.
