Clocking Off is a collection of poems by Volkan Yıldız, developed in English from his original Turkish work.
Moving between Anatolian landscapes and working-class life in London, the poems draw on childhood, poverty, migration, labour, memory and the small details of everyday survival. Restaurant workers, street children, family memories, neighbourhoods, local foods, religious imagery and mythology appear alongside moments of humour, anger, tenderness and absurdity.
These English versions are not intended as word-for-word translations. Instead, they preserve the image, rhythm, humour and emotional life of the original poems, allowing them to find a new voice in English.
Direct, sometimes surreal and often darkly humorous, Clocking Off is rooted in lived experience and in the people, places and memories that continue to endure across languages and landscapes.
