Book Overview

Sleeping Beauty, Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella, Puss in Boots, Little Red Riding Hood, Beauty and the Beast : these are the fairy tales that have captivated children through the centuries, the stories that make their eyes grow wide in wonder and joy, the ones every child should experience. Through his exquisite illustrations and artful retellings, Michael Foreman captures all the charm and mystery of 14 eternal classics. His radiant paintings shine with color: the glimmering gold of Cinderella's coach; the rich hue of Red Riding Hood's cloak; the vivid green of the beanstalk rising up to the sky; the luminous, almost transparent white of Sleeping Beauty's gown and bed. This is a truly special collection that every child should own--and that every parent will take pride in sharing.

Stories are long

I bought this for my almost 6 year old granddaughter. Of course, when I sit down to read it, the 3 yr. old climbs up in my lap and listens intently. Both girls love the stories, but I have to admit, I wish they weren't so long. I felt certain that the girls wouldn't sit still that long, but they don't mind at all. Yes, there are a few gory details in the book, but surely people realize that the original fairy tales are very violent and gruesome. The title states that these are "classic" fairy tales....so buyer be warned. The only detail so far that has bothered me was the stepmother in Snow White eating the liver and lungs of what she thought was Snow White. If you've seen the Disney Snow White movie, you know that the woodcutter brings her the heart of an animal instead of Snow White's heart. OK, that's pretty gruesome. Only the cannibalism makes the story in the book any worse. The illustrations are beautiful. My only complaint is the length of the stories. A few pages shorter would have been fine with me. Each story is about 12 pages long and that includes at least one full page illustration and several smaller illustrations.
