Growing up as a closeted gay kid in a small town in Atlantic Canada, this book hit me hard. I read it for the first time when I was in 12th grade and it put words to so many complicated feelings that I knew but didn’t understand yet.
I also deeply appreciate that while this is a story about a gay main character, it’s not only a Gay Story. It’s also about friendship and complicated family dynamics and growing up and learning to make decisions and forgiveness and slowly, through all of this, beginning to understand yourself.
I re-read it at least once a year and I recommend it to literally everyone, it’s quite honestly the best book I’ve ever read and it will always hold a very important place in my heart.
