Two boys' review: There's magic in this fresh Christmas story

"Little Santa looks after the forest. He knows all the animals and trees by name." So starts a delightful story that treads fresh snow, no easy feat for a children's Christmas book. You won't find Frosty the Snowman here; no mention of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer either. And the storyline doesn't call for someone to step in for Santa on Christmas Eve and deliver presents around the world. "Once a year he plans a special treat for his friends. Little Santa is full of surprises." Author Sue Stainton and illustrator Eva Melhuish kept my sons, ages 6 and 4, entranced during our first bedtime reading. My sons asked me many questions over the course of the 32-page story but I was delighted not to know how the story would end. And I won't spoil the ending for you. The book has held up well to additional bedtime readings as we prepare for Christmas. In summary, there's nothing wrong with children's Christmas classics (here's a great one: The Night Before Christmas) but if you're interested in something new look no further than Christmas Magic.
