...and might have helped "sweet soprano girl" understand the reason for the way Chinhominey is spelled. The glossary at the back of the book says that the "romanization for the accurate Korean pronunciation of the word would be CHINHALMONEY. The spelling of the word as CHINHOMINEY, however, is intended to reflect the Americanized way it would be pronounced by Grace and Christina."

an Asian-American story

I seldom read fiction; however, I enjoy this fiction very much because this book describes the daily dilema of Asian-American. and somewhat I can relate to my own life. As an Asian-American, no matter when you live and where you grew up, you are always considered as Asian. And some of the traditional "beliefs" and "expectations" are always there. You can considered yourself as an American and pay no attentions to what the traditional customs/beliefs, however, you are still expected to do certain things and obey to certain rules. Something are never changed and won't changed.....

Captivating and very well written

I was very impressed by the author's descriptive and concise style of writing in this portrayal of a Korean-American family. The storyline integrated many cultural aspects which gave it a genuine "realness". The author obviously did her research and put much thought into the well layed-out storyline. I would definitely recommend this book if you enjoyed other Asian American novels, such as "Clay Walls" and "No-No Boy".

Something most traditional Asian-Americans can relate to.

As an first generation Asian American, I could relate and understand alot about this culture.

An engrossing novel that transcends culture. I loved it!!

This book is both entertaining and insightful. It is a beautifully told story of the expectations and illusions that shape a family's history through several generations. Ms. Kim's prose is rich and exquisitely crafted. These characters will stay with you long after you finish reading this wonderful book. I can't wait for her next novel!
