Children of Dust

By Marlin Barton

Book Overview

A Southern family grapples with secrets and racial tensions in the shadow of the Civil War. In rural Alabama, 1873, Melinda Anderson struggles to give birth to her tenth child, attended by Annie Mae, a part-Choctaw midwife. The infant's death hours later ignites suspicion, centering on Betsy, the mixed-race mistress of Melinda's husband, Rafe, and Melinda herself, worn by endless pregnancies and harboring resentment. Seeking to clear her name, Melinda turns to a conjure woman, unleashing tragic consequences.

Years later, in 2000, Seth Anderson unearths this hidden history, confronting his family's past and his own role in its silence. Children of Dust explores the enduring legacy of race, class, and family ties in the Deep South, revealing that the greatest mysteries lie within the human heart.
