excellent cultural voice

This is a great book. I ended up using it in a college class I taught, as a way for students to discuss the lines between culture and citizenship. The thirteen stories in here span important issues involving identity, and the Chicano and Chicanas place in the world. These stories are hilarious and bittersweet. It is the best book I have ever used for a class because "Chicano Chicanery" is so creative, well-written and accessible that students can immediately understand it. But it is also chock full of deeper meaning: insights which both reflect and transcend, insights which many of my students have told me authentically reflect their own feelings and their own lives. A great read!

AWESOME Collection of short stories!

This book was an awesome collection of short stories. My favorite "Godoy Lives" is real gritty, true to the Chicano experience. And the character "Peacock" was also dear to this Fresno reader, especially when one considers Andres Montoya as a possible source of inspiration for the development of this character. This book works on many levels, but was easy and pleasant to read. It was something that I found myself reading before bed, in the calm of the evening. I would definitely recommend this book to others!

Chicano literature

A nice collection of short stories by a Chicano writer who is sure to soon be included in american / chicano literature courses through out America. Full of unique and fresh stories from chicano college boys to a token chicano news anchor man. Chacon is a master at weaving the three identities Chicanos often dance with (American, Chicano, "old self, new self". These stories will leave you often haunted, yet dieing to read more of his works. A must for your Chicano collection.
