Charlotte's Choice

By Gary B Lewis

Charlotte has always had a choice. The trouble is, she hasn't always made the right one.

A pattern of lying, stealing and hiding the truth has followed Charlotte Rodrigues through her primary school years. At home and at school, trust is wearing thin, consequences are becoming more serious, and Charlotte is struggling with the person she sees reflected back at her.

Then there is Miss Ellie, the school chaplain.

Through conversations, games and some unusual activities involving a mirror, a Value Scale and a treasure box filled with stones, Miss Ellie gently invites Charlotte to look beyond her behaviour and consider some deeper questions. What determines a person's value? Do our past choices have to define us? And what happens when we begin to see ourselves differently?

Supported by Miss Ellie's quiet encouragement and Grammy's faithful prayers, Charlotte gradually discovers that honesty takes courage, choices have consequences, and second chances can open the way to change. Most importantly, she begins to understand that she is created by God with value and purpose - and that the next choice is hers to make.

Inspired by true events, Charlotte's Choice is a warm and thought-provoking Christian story for upper-primary and junior-secondary readers. Exploring honesty, integrity, self-worth, identity, faith and second chances, it offers opportunities for meaningful conversations between young people and the parents, grandparents, teachers and chaplains who walk alongside them.
