One of the best books I've read this year

This book is totally funny and has great character development. The first two chapters start slow but keep reading for a funny fast paced story about Rachel, normal human with a demon (or two) in the family. Reading this, you really get the feel for Sam the male lead and Rachel and how it is possiable that someone really does have a worse life than you do. Also on hand is a gun toating Preist, a best friend that has visions of the devil, a rogue angel and a couple dozen demons all trying to make Rachel's life hell on earth. Finish up with two compleet slapstick comedic Watcher Angels and things get very funny. Casidy, Rachels son is very funny as well. Recommended reading, you won't regreat it!

Loved it!

Rachel Farnsworth's husband goes missing at the worst time. It's her son's 1st birthday and Rachel just witnessed Cassidy breathing fire. But that's not the only bad news. It turns out her missing husband was taken over by a demon, 5 years ago! So that makes Cassidy half demon and it's a bitter pill for Rachel to swallow. With the help of fallen angel/bounty hunter Sam, Rachel is on her deadbeat demon husband's trail but he's been keeping a thousand-year-old secret so Sam and Rachel are not the only ones on the hunt. This book was a fast, fun read. Rachel is a gold mine of wit and sass all rolled up into a Texas firecracker. Plus there are plenty of well developed secondary characters that make this book a laugh riot. There are two "watcher angels" that taunt each other relentlessly. Another fallen angel named Azazel that fancies himself a ladies man, an immortal bad girl named Casiphia that holds a grudge against Sam when she should be thanking him and many, many more. Can't Teach an Old Demon New Tricks is book two in the Devil Went Down to Dogwood (Rachel's hometown) series but it definitely stands alone as I have not yet read the first book, Every Demon Has His Day, but I will be fixing that soon. I recommend this one for anyone who loves light paranormals.

A uniquely gratifying mix of horror elements in comedic placement

Sometimes horror isn't horror. sometimes it is a laughtrack that is set in the most unusual of places. That was what I thought when I read this book, and when I thought if I would recommend it to others. Normally the comedy in books like these harken to the wrong type of books, messing things up along the way. This work did none of that, however, because it did not camoflauge what it was from the title on. If you are worried about the plot or the characterization, worry not. Some nice storytelling in an interesting way make you want to read the book. I stayed up until I could soak it all in, knowing that another turn would take me down another interesting path. And interesting paths they were. From trying to see the adapting of characters to odd struggles to just plain having fun with a subject like demons, I was really surprised. Surprised, and happy with the results. If you are like me and question books like this, you shouldn't worry. The hardcore readers can enjoy this, just like the light readers can. You can be on either end of the spectrum and still find the humor here. I think that shocked me the most as a reader - laughing at the subject matter more than once and thinking "this idea sellsi itself." Its golden - and well worth your time.

Funny, Fresh and a Perfect Beach Read

Can't Teach an Old Demon New Tricks by Cara Lockwood This is book number 2 in the "Devil Went Down to Dogwood" series with the first book beingEvery Demon Has His Day(Mass Market Paperback - Jan. 26, 2010). While it isn't strictly necessary to read "Every Demon Has His Day" before you read this one, it probably will help you to understand this book just a bit better. Plus it was a wonderful read in its own right! In "Can't Teach and Old Demon New Tricks" we meet Rachel Farnsworth, her very, very precocious child Cassidy and her Demon husband Kevin. Rachel isn't aware that her husband Kevin was taken over by a Demon during a convention Kevin was attending, although Rachel does know something isn't quite right. Not with her husband or with her child. After all, what one year old child can set things on fire, or make a trip to the top of a refrigerator by themselves? Now Kevin the Demon has "half of the underworld" looking for him and it ain't going to be pretty when they catch him! Throw in two angels in training, a seer (who we've meet in the first book) a fallen angel named Sam, a Demon hunting Priest and chaos reigns and hilarity ensues!! Ms. Lockwood writes that Demons are getting their Demon training while working at the Department of Motor Vehicles and "Value"-Mart, and I think I really have to strongly agree with her! This series is going to be a winner as it combines so many of the best elements from different genres. It's a romance, a mystery, comedy, and has a touch of Mom/Chick lit! Strong heroines, sexy male protagonists, paranormal activity and crazy wackiness abounds; add in a happy ending and you pretty much have all the bases covered! The characters are very strongly and meticulously written, the plot is fast paced and fun and I just can't wait to see what happens next in this series.

Rollicking fun

Poor Rachel can't figure out what is wrong with her husband Kevin, who 5 years ago had a personality change and is just slothful. They had a baby boy named Cassidy and he is a cause for worry also in that he can blow fire and teleport at will , he does not climb cabinets he flies up and he is just 12 months old.Life is not simple, Kevin disappears, Cassidy is getting wilder and a fallen angel is looking for Kevin. Did I mention that the angel does not have wings, smells like warm cinammon and is some kinda sexy to boot. Everyone is looking for Kevin and the chase is on with Kevin not wanting to be found and finally the devil, satan himself gets into the game. That is when things get really interesting and somewhat sticky. What is a girl to do but go along till she can find that no good man. Love the book.
