One of my favorites

Like some of the others who've reviewed Ms. Keyes' books, CAME A CAVALIER is one of my favorites of her wonderful novels. My first introduction to Ms. Keyes' work came through a double volume containing SENATOR MARLOWE'S DAUGHTER and THE GREAT TRADITION, both wonderful stories. Over the years I've bought and read all of her books, and I've never been disappointed. I can see how some readers might think her writing is slow. That's because she takes time to give rich details of the time period, her settings, and the backgrounds for her plots. Her impeccable research is second to none. But that's not why I love her work so much. What she does best is tell a great story. In the end, that's the difference between her work and that of lesser writers. Some of them have forgotten that first and foremost they are supposed to be story tellers. Ms. Keyes' books stand the test of time, because great writing and story telling will never go out of style. If you have a chance to read any of her novels, don't pass it up. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Wonderful, old-fashioned historical romance

I was first introduced to Mrs. Keyes work by my Grandmother as a young teen. When I finished all the titles in her library, I scoured every library and used bookshop for more. Came a Cavalier is my favorite! Set in war-torn France, the story begins as WWI ends and continues through WWII. It is the story of Constance, a Searcher, a version of a Red Cross worker, who meets and falls in love with a handsome French calvalry officer Tristan. Their happiness is complete until WWII calls the officer back to war. Constance holds her ground in her husband's ancestral chateau throughout the German occupation. Her courage and fortitude are inspiring. The story is griping and full of detail so that you feel you are there in France sipping 100 year old Calvados brandy with the characters. As with most of F.P.Keyes' books, it is a great read!
