Antisocial, dorky boy seeks fun-loving, sexy vampire for blood-sucking and transforming into her minion. One sleepless night, Ko slips out to walk the streets. Life after dark is a revelation! Especially when he meets flirtatious Nazuna. Except that she's a vampire. That's okay. He wants to become a creature of the night too. But transformation doesn't come that easily... Ko seriously considers the pros and cons of becoming a vampire. But every human has a different take on it, and one just wants to kill them all! Then, when the police are alerted to Ko's nighttime jaunts, they start to cramp his style. Ko learns something surprising about vampire Haka--and gets a tempting offer. Nazuna has a change of heart--but not about everything. And Ko wants to know what vampire Kiku's intentions are regarding Ko's deliciously human friend Mahiru...
As Ko's nightly adventures with the vampire Nazuna continues, he learns more not only about his friend, but about the vampire race and their customs. However, when a private investigator learns of Ko's escapades, she tries to dissuade him of hanging around with vampires, and even notifies the police of a runaway kid to really cramp his fun! He begins to question if he truly wants to become a vampire for the rest of his undead life, and if vampires are actually trustworthy.
This book has caused me to want a vampire friend. Even when serious moments happen, you feel the intensity of the situation, the excitement of it, but the overall laid-back atmosphere of the series dulls its edges, so it's not bad to read right before bed. (Speaking from experience.)
Volume 4 and 5 have really put more of a plot in the story, which I appreciate. Before it felt like the stories were connected, but it was mostly one-shots strung together with a vague overarching motive. Now, however, we're getting into more vampire lore and meaty bits of the story, and I find the vampire lore particularly interesting.
If you want a fun, laid-back, urban supernatural read, definitely give the series a shot!
