Kit never means to steal the bracelet; it is just a dumb mistake. But when she is caught Kit is sentenced to twenty hours of volunteer work at the humane society. Kit knows how it feels to be stuck in... This description may be from another edition of this product.
I loved this book so much. I read it more times than I could count in my teenage years. Peg Kehret did a really great job setting up an 'unfair' competitor at school and Kit's unhappy home life without any real malice. Kit's not being abused, and Monica isn't evil or out to get her - life just sucks sometimes, and can be fundamentally unfair. Cages tells the story of Kit grappling with the unfairness of life and her own sense of feeling trapped and powerless, as she learns to stop blaming others for having it better than her, and look towards how to take the wheel in her own life.
Parents should be aware that this is *very* much a 90's novel in its' depiction of animal shelters; the dog rescue world has changed dramatically in the past 30 years, and this book paints a far rosier picture of dog shelters than exists today for impressionable young animal lovers. This book was written before the no-kill movement really took off, and far fewer people spayed their pets. The concerns, reflected in this novel, mostly revolved around healthy, friendly dogs being put down due to overcrowding, and Kit does not risk working with aggressive, dangerous dogs in her time as a volunteer, as those dogs would have been summarily put to sleep back in the day. I would hesitate to hand this book to a kid obsessed with animals, like I was, without some serious conversations about modern dog shelters and their safety issues.
Cages- A Review

First of all I have to say that I find it interesting that some people thought this book was boring and some people loved it. I could see where the male population might stick up their nose to this or those who just aren't interested in dogs may find it dull as well, but personally, I found it captivating. This book was basically about a girl named Kit who is having a difficult time. Her stepdad gets drunk and her mom doesn't want to face the facts. A snobby rich girl gets the lead for the play and Kit is stuck making posters. So Kit's depression causes her to suddenly steal a bracelet from Pierre's (a jewelry store). She is caught and sentenced to work at the Humane Society for 20 hours. This experience causes her to take action and understand herself. I personally loved this book but I've always loved animals. P.s. I realized that if Ms. Fenton would have chosen Kit to be the lead none of this would have happened. One decision can make or break you. This situation "broke" Kit but worked out for the better. ;)

This book was outstanding! It is about this girl named kit who is kind of troubled because she just lost the lead in the school play and her stepdad is an alcoholic. Kit likes a gold braclet and steals it. Kit ends up having to work 20 hours in the Humane Society. I loved this book because it has something to do with a girl my age and animals.(I love animals) This story kept me on the edge of my seat and it will keep you on yours too! I couldnt put this book down.

This book shows a lot of feeling and presents a lot of things for discussion. Kit learns how to deal with some problems the hard way. She is in a world where a lot of things aren't fair and don't make very much sense. And when she goes to work with the dogs, things start making sense and she pieces her life back together.
It was one of the best books I have ever read! Buy it!!!

It was really sad, but it shows you that when it comes to having problems you are no where near alone. Kit is a great charter! She may not be perfect, but she is much better that way!The old man in the book is so smart! At the end I was so glad to see Kit's mother have the look of pride in her eyes!!! Kit deserved it!
