Good things come in small packages

Those that consider series romances not worth their time or effort are, in my opinion, missing some wonderful writing and storytelling. "Butterfly Summer," first in the Davis Landing series by Arlene James, published by Steeple Hill's Love Inspired line, is one such example. Ms. James gives depth not only to the primary characters, Heather Hamilton and Ethan Danes, but to the whole Hamilton clan, whose stories will be told by different authors in upcoming Davis Landing books. The Hamilton's run a publishing empire from small town Davis Landing, just outside of Nashville. When Wallace Hamilton, 59-year-old patriarch of the clan, is diagnosed with leukemia, it sets off a tidal wave of emotions and consequences in the family, challenging each of them to the core of their beliefs. "Butterfly Summer" is middle daughter Heather's story. Content to live in the background of her charismatic family, Heather lands in the limelight when a last minute features cancellation makes her the "Makeover Maven" candidate. When Ethan Danes, staff photographer, begins to take an interest in her, Heather is sure it is because of her makeover. But to Ethan, the makeover has only shown the world that Heather's outer beauty is a pale comparison to her inner beauty. Can they get past their misunderstandings and see God's purpose in their relationship? I loved both Heather and Ethan. Ms. James shows that, no matter what our outward appearance, financial situation or family background, each of us has doubts and insecurities. But when we turn them over to the Lord, He can, like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly, make something beautiful out of them. This is the first of Arlene James' books I have read, but it won't be the last.
