Some mountains keep their secrets. Buck Killpack is about to dig one up.
Adventure rider Buck Killpack heads into Montana's Bitterroot Mountains on his battered KTM two-stroke, Gypsie, chasing a forty-year-old newspaper clipping about a fire lookout that was sealed up under strange circumstances. Before he reaches the tower, he spots a thin gray column of smoke rising from a valley that has no business burning.
At the old lookout he meets Tom Sinclair, a hermit who has logged every strange light, truck, and plume of smoke for nearly forty years. A few miles on, a barricade of freshly cut pines blocks the road, with a warning tied to a branch: TURN AROUND. LAST WARNING.
Buck rides around it.
Down in the valley, he teams up with Ben Ashcroft, a stubborn rancher with a terrible coffee habit and an even older Honda in the barn. Strangers with antique survey maps have been mapping the ground and digging along a line the Forest Service never wrote down. When the trucks turn on Buck and Ben, a chase through steep timber and across a creek crossing will test both machines and both riders.
Under the ridge lies a hidden research station, a reel-to-reel tape recorded the day of the 1986 fire, and a woman who has been guarding Charlie Dawson's secrets for decades. The men with the excavator want what's down there gone. Buck wants the truth to outlive them.
Buckshot Killpack and the Bitterroot Fire is a fast-paced mountain mystery with dirt-road riding, backcountry grit, and a story that moves. It's a quick read for anyone who likes adventure, mysteries, or a good ride.
