Broken Mirrors

High school sophomore Madeline Port wants nothing more than to get out of her small Georgia town and leave high school in the rearview. Her household is anything but stable with two parents who struggled to balance their daily productive lives with their alcoholic behaviors at night. Growing up, she was a good girl but always felt disconnected from her peers, her family, and most importantly her body. She had some friends out of convenience but nothing distracted her from her professional goals. Nothing until she met Bobby Green one fateful day in homeroom class. What began as an infuriating banter turned into an attraction which later grows into Madeline making decisions well outside of her character. She fell in love, letting her barriers down and let herself do something she couldn't do at home; be young. She went against her instincts because she felt accepted by Bobby and didn't define their relationship. She decided to lose her virginity to him and knew that whatever happened next she wouldn't regret having her first time with someone she loves. She learns the next day of his months-long betrayal leaving her vulnerable and heartbroken. She was furious with Bobby but more furious with herself. She swore that she would not let relationships distract her from her goals and she would go to college to start fresh.

Upon arriving at college she quickly finds jobs to support herself determined to redefine whom she saw in the mirror. She joined a sorority and met the best friend she ever knew in beautiful Evelyn. Evelyn swore to protect her from harm but Evelyn couldn't prevent the life-altering sexual assault that Madeline survived. She finds solace in her friendship with Evelyn and is devastated to watch her leave school after graduating. During her time at home, Madeline's parents tell her they are getting divorced and the worry she feels over them living alone with their addiction is too much to handle. In the midst of a breakdown, she hears a voice from the past and Bobby arrives. Can love be rekindled with the man that is responsible for your first experience with heartbreak? Can Madeline let love in after being attacked? Madeline didn't believe in coincidences but something about Bobby finding her like this felt like fate. She supports her father through his emotional journey in rehab and someone unexpected in her life meets a tragic end putting Madeline's priorities, wants, and desires in order to make herself the most important person in her life.
