Though somewhat stereotypical of the Hebridean Island Gael, the Bridal Path is a funny and sympathetic look at this islander's search for a wife. Our hero, Ewan MacEwan, takes the ferry from his isle of Erismore to the Scottish mainland to find a proper wife to take care of his house and children. Before going, he is counselled by the elder men of his family on the does and don'ts of who and where to find a wife (stay away from Campbells, Catholics and cousins). Landing on the mainland, he meets with several situations of mistaken intent and mistaken identity, where he is thought to be masher, a salmon poacher or a white slaver. Despite all this, it is a very funny book, from which a film was made in 1959. Though I believe you have to be either a Scottish Highlander or from Cape Breton Island in Canada to get all of the jokes, it is nevertheless one of the funniest books I have read.
