Great for the grammar.

This book is very good for the grammatical pat of the Brazilian Portugese language, however, one still needs a CD to listen to the pronunciation.

Home study of Brazilian Portuguese

Teach Yourself Brazilian Portuguese Complete Course Package (Book + 2CDs) (Teach Yourself Language Complete Courses) This is fairly easy to get started and in depth enough to make it worthwhile - the mixture of written and spoken language is useful as are the revision sections. Well worth the money if you need to learn more than the very basics.

A pleasant introduction with some faults

The author of this book should win an award for the worst pronunciation guide. The examples for vowels and consonants are so vague, one really doesn't know when to use a nasal vowel or not, and the consonant 'r' needs a good deal more seeing how it is aspirated in certain instances. On the other hand, if you are looking for an enjoyable introduction to BP, this book will give you all the basics. I bought it to learn a bit of the language to make my ESL students feel welcome and to speak to my cleaning staff. One cannot learn a language with one book, but combined with the cd's you can get a decent start.

I have been using a number of different methods to try and learn Brazilian Portuguese, including Rosetta Stone software. [...] I have learned more from this book than any other method. Nobody likes to study; although, I actually look forward to come home from work and dive into the book rather than use my [...] software.To get the most benefit from this book, try and learn the pronunciation. Fortunately, my husband is Brazilian so he helps me with that aspect. He said I am doing absolutely fantastic since I have been using this book. I hope an advanced book will be released soon!!!!

The best beginning book out there.

Simply said, after a year in Brasil, I didn't run into a better beginning book than this one. Its fun, accessible, and fresh.
