A Great Read

Brandywine's War, Back in Country is the story of Chief Warrant Officer W.W. Brandywine's exploits in getting his novel, about the Vietnam War, published while he is still serving in Vietnam. It is a humorous, yet touching, look at how one-man deals with the madness of war and his interaction with a wide arrange of personalities around him. Through his many years of service in the Army, Chief Brandywine knows how to work the system and he doesn't hesitate to drive a truck through any loophole he finds. From scrounging for supplies to by passing channels to get the assignment he wants, time after time Brandywine works his way around the bureaucratic red tape set in place by his chief nemesis Colonel Cleaver. But for Brandywine, it isn't enough that he has found a way around the system for himself, he takes those who serve with and under him along for the ride. Brandywine's War, Back in Country is one of those rare stories that you never want it to end. The storyline, the dialog, and the characters are woven together to form a very moving and enjoyable reading experience. Five stars to one of America's great storytellers, Robert Vaughan.

Military Service as it Really Is

This book is great fun to read, but, as with books such as Gulliver's Travels, it can be understood on several levels. One must respect the truth that our military services are populated by men and women of the highest caliber who get the job done, often in spite of irrational obstacles and frequently with great ingenuity and quick-witted initiative. As creatures of government, however, military services have always been burdened with inescapable "system" overseen by faceless authority at a far remove. Maintaining efficient and effective operations while satisfying the demands of "the system" is a constant career challenge that requires unfettered thinking and no small amount of personal courage. Regulation and rank structure, unfortunately, does attract the military profession's small share of self-centered sycophantic pettifoggers, most of whom get weeded-out in the harsh practicalities of the combat environment and never rise to significant levels of influence. A Colonel Cleaver is the exception, not the norm, among leaders that evoke exceptional and spirited performance from the ranks. Brandywine and his comrades typify those loyal troops who carry out their missions in the finest traditions of their calling, in spite of the occasional obstructionist who puts system over substance. That they do so with such verve and imagination makes reading this book a fast, exciting, and enlightening entertainment. Frank S. Virden, Captain, USN (Ret.)

A LIGHT HEARTED & SERIOUS LOOK AT THE VIETNAM WAR!!!

Chief Warrant Officer Three W.W. Brandywine is a free spirit who flies helicopters in Vietnam. In order to make his tour of duty less stressful, Brandywine finds ways around the system. In BRANDYWINE'S WAR: BACK IN COUNTRY you will meet some of his eccentric comrades. There's Unsoldier, a civilian who while protesting, was knocked out by a soldier, stuffed in an Army duffle bag and shipped to Vietnam. Fist Lieutenant Jefferson Freemont Kirby is awarded his first Purple Heart from a simple thorn prick. Brandywine's best friend B.Dowling Mudd was recommended for the Medal Of Honor, but instead was charged with the murder of enemy soldiers by a general who wanted to be know as a "peace general". As a result of some behind-the-scenes activity, Brandywine was able to get the medal awarded to the general and the court-martial of B. Dowling Mudd dropped. Lieutenant Jane Gray is a nurse who comes into Brandywine's life at a time he thinks that he will never love again. While in Vietnam, Brandywine writes and finally sells his first book, BRANDYWINE'S WAR. The deal hinges on going to New York to sign the contract, which gets tied up in an agreement with W.W.'s CO Colonel Cleader that Brandywine extends his tour of duty for another six months. Brandywine reluctantly agrees, and is off to New York. In New York Brandywine not only signs his book contract but is surprised when his wife asks him for a divorce. Once back in Vietnam, Colonel Cleaver has Brandywine assigned to him. Using Cleaver's own orders to his advantage, Brandywine manages to avoid reporting directly to the Colonel. Cleaver finally catches up with Brandywine and has him charged with being AWOL for not reporting in. But again W.W. is one step ahead of of Cleaver and proves he was not AWOL. All is not fun and games for Brandywine. Men are getting killed in this war. Even some of those close to Brandywine are not going back home. BRANDYWINE'S WAR: BACK IN COUNTRY is a light-hearted, yet serious look at the Vietnam war as Robert Vaughan brings his characters to life. Characters you soon won't forget.

After 25 years I still laugh at the crude truth in this book

Mister Brandywine was incapable of accepting that he was a great unsung hero of the "conflict overseas". His ability to not only survive the assaults on his sanity, but to actually succeed in every attempt at counter assaults, should be a lesson taught to every WO or nco candidate in the army...present and future. He made me laugh, trying to fly a Huey without a seat, and he made me cry, trying to understand a young officers aversion to crapping in the same slit trench as an enlisted man. I read this book 25 years ago in Tahkli Thailand and I have been trying to find a copy for myself ever since. A wonderful book with the glorious truth up front for all to see.

There is no equal review of the actions and attatude of the

I'm a retired Army Warrant Officer and Aviator. When I read this book I cried. Then I cheered. This book hits the truth meter on every event. I would rate this book as history, not fiction. The last page gets even for all the criminal stupidity that the Comissioned officers (we called them "RLO's" real live officers) committed in this War. I applaud Mr.Vaughn
