Bound in Ash

She was sent to kill him. The Order didn't tell her the ritual was designed to kill her instead.

For eleven years, Kier Ashwood has been a Hunter of the Ember Order - trained since seventeen, trusted with two black seals, taught by a man who calls himself her Magistrate and used to be, in every way that mattered, her father.

Now Halloran has handed her a third black seal. The target is Vale Corvinus, lord of a Great House, the kind of vampire the Order has never once sent a single Hunter to kill.

The word on the writ is solo. The last time the Order moved against a seated lord, they sent six.

Kier walks into Corvinus Hold on a rainy night with a silvered blade and a ritual she has been carrying in her blood since she was nineteen. She puts the blade in cleanly. She speaks the words. The room goes white.

Vale Corvinus does not die.

Something opens between them instead. A binding. A door in the middle of her chest that will not close. And on the other side of it, a man with river-ice eyes says the sentence that unmakes eleven years of her life in a single breath:

They did not tell you what I did.

He is right. They did not tell her that her mother walked into this Hold twenty years ago with the same ritual on her tongue. They did not tell her that a Hunter named Iven Marsh walked in eight months ago, or the one before him a hundred and forty years back. They did not tell her that Halloran has been feeding Hunters into Corvinus Hold on a twenty-year drumbeat, and that someone at the Court has been paying him for every one of them.

They did not tell her because she was never meant to survive to ask.

Now the binding holds her to the man she came to kill. A vampire lord with a hundred and sixty years of grief. A sister who runs a house on the Silver Row and has been keeping a file for eleven years. A best friend named Sable in a kitchen above a bookbinder's shop, quietly building the case that could bring the whole Order down. And a Hunter named Corin Vale, who Kier has known since they were nineteen on a summer roof, and who is about to be handed a writ of his own.

They have six days to unmake a conspiracy older than any of them. They have one bell, at midnight on the seventh, to stop a settlement that would end House Corvinus and hand the Court whatever it has been quietly buying for two decades. They have a rule written on vellum in an archivist's hand, and a working table with seven chairs, and the small clean fact that Kier Ashwood was never sent to die in this house. She was sent to end it.

But the door in her chest is not going anywhere. And what grows underneath it, in the small careful shape of a house that has quietly decided to keep her, may be the only thing on either side of the Concord that Halloran did not plan for.

Bound in Ash is a slow-burn dark paranormal romance for readers who like their vampires old and dangerous, their Hunters sharper than the blades they carry, and their found family assembled at a kitchen table at three in the morning with the folio open and the tea gone cold.
