I like how it gives me examples of "real life people" and there situations and issues I can very much relate to. But I don't feel that it gave me any tools for real life coping. Or on how to lessen the struggle and the pain it brings every day.
As a teacher, this book is an inspiration

We are writing to applaud the book "Borderline Personality Disorder Demystified" by Dr. Robert Friedel. My wife and I have been deeply involved with those who have the BPD diagnosis. We have been voracious readers of virtually everything relevant to this diagnosis. Over the past four years while seeking to educate ourselves on BPD, we have become teachers of an excellent course for families touched by this disorder. When Dr. Friedel's book was first published, we adopted it as our "handbook", thanks to its easy readability and thorough coverage of the many challenging and sometimes confusing aspects of BPD. We also were touched by the author's personal exposure through his sister, and it was reassuring to gain first-hand knowledge from a practicing psychiatrist who not only runs a BPD clinic, but also is involved in research, writes scientific articles and teaches on this disorder. We offer an array of reading materials on BPD in our family classes, yet have found no other book as versatile, factual and useful for the entire family including the person with the BPD diagnosis. People enter our classes with expressions of helplessness and despair and it has been of great comfort to add Dr. Friedel's message of inspiration and hope. Again, we enthusiastically recommend this book as a "must read". J. Hall
My favorite comprehensive book on BPD: Life affirming
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 21 years ago
Living with BPD and other psychiatric conditions, I have found this book to be by far the best overall book on the subject and my favorite -- and I've read about ten. Before you read on, Please know that there is help for you and your family: this book is a best place to start!! The author shows deep compassion and a brilliant mind throughout the text. His sister suffered from BPD and he is a pioneer in the pharmocological treatment of BPD. While he is wonderfully balanced in his belief in tandem psychiatric and psychological treatment, which he feels is essential for optimal treatment, and the genetic, biological, and enviornmental view of the etiology of the illness, he thoroughly presents you with his and the latest biological and pharmocological (and other) understanding. He is the first to acknowledge in a book, to my knowledge, the possibility of BPD forming in the womb: yay!! I love many other aspects of this book, including the resources in the back of advocacy organizations, research and treatment programs, and etc. You will be helping save your life and/or its quality, as well as your family, if you read this...!
