Sparks fly as the leaves fall this autumn...From the USA Today bestselling superstar romance author of the Boston Bolts hockey series comes a spicy and swoony friends-to-lovers fake-dating delight. . . This gorgeous first edition trade paperback features colored stenciled edges. These old flames are ready to catch fire. For Penny Darling, love is best enjoyed between the pages of a book. After a very public failed engagement, she'd rather cozy up by the fire with a book boyfriend than a real one any day. And as the owner of Bonfire & Bliss Bookstore, she has her pick. Then Jake "Monty" Montgomery returns home. Her high school best friend, now a struggling author with inked forearms and wicked green eyes. And he needs her help. His proposal is simple: She'll teach him to write the perfect book boyfriend and he'll pose as her real boyfriend, keeping Hope Harbor's busybodies--and their obsession with Penny's love life--at bay. But when their lessons begin, the line between fiction and reality grows dangerously thin. As pretend kisses in the apple orchard turn into searing ones beneath the autumn moon, Penny begins to wonder if Monty could really love her, or if she's destined for another broken heart.
Really like the characters in this. We have Monty who is a man against falling in love, yet he’s utterly taken with his high school best friend even ten years after graduating. He’s a writer in… a slump. He no longer can find the words. So he leaves New York and goes back to his home town and moves back into his family home where his high school best friend still lives and owns a bookshop. Then we have Penny who has a bookshop that is struggling a bit and recovering from a broken engagement with a bad boyfriend and dealing with well intentioned friends and family trying to get her to try dating again. She’s looking forward to Monty moving back as she’s missed her best friend and they have just started talking again in the last few months. She has no idea Monty has been interested in her for years.
They run into one another and realize she knows a lot about books and might be able to help him write again and she could use some help keeping everyone from pushing her to date again so they decide to pretend to date, neither realizing the other already has more than friend feelings.
It’s a common trope friends to lovers, but this one is done so well and there are so many minor characters that keeps the story fun and funny. I will love Daisy forever. Can’t go wrong with a mini cow. It’s a warm happy story with just a bit of spiciness. But it’s mostly cozy feelings and showing how friends and family and small towns take care of one another and home and family isn’t just about blood ties and where youre born. Both those that grew up in this town and those that have found their way there are welcomed and cared about. As it should be. Really enjoyed this. Is a cute warm fuzzies story.
