One day while rock climbing in the desert, University of Arizona graduate student Chris Fanning makes a discovery that will change his life forever. In the sand, recently unearthed by a tornado, he finds a human skeleton. The skeleton shows no trace of flesh, fascia, or soft parts. Fanning takes the bones to the university where he consults with various experts who lead him to one inescapable, and disturbing, conclusion about the bones.
