Flamingnet.com Teen Book Reviews-suspense, love and action all mixed into a great book

Keira Kelly has finally Changed and has full ability of her powers as heir to the Kelly Clan throne. The problem, she has no idea how to use or control them. When she gets a phone call from her grandmother, Minerva, also known as Gigi explaining that her former lover, Gideon is in a coma and needs Keira's help, she hops onto the first plane and makes her way to Vancouver. Although, she will not be accompanied by her lover, Adam, who insisted on staying in Rio Seco, Texas, she gets the pleasure of Daffyd ap Geraint, the Sidhe prince, her brother, Tucker and Tucker's lover, Niko, flanking her side. What no one realizes are the changes that are going to happen and the unexpected twists that are going to take place in all of their lives upon arriving in this overcasted city. It's up to Keira to uncover the importance of her birthright to the throne and her next step will therefore unravel the fate of her Family. Blood Kin is the 3rd book to the Matters of the Blood series written by Maria Lima. The beginning of the book was slow but once I got past that, the rest of the book was a breeze and could not put it down. The turn of every page was something new and unexpected; by the end of every chapter, there were twists and turns that left you wanting more! Maria wrote with such description of the characters' feelings that you could actually feel the sorrow, the tension, the love, radiating out the book. I would recommend this to anyone who wants suspense, love and action all mixed into a great book. great urban fantasy

Keira Kelly belongs to Clan Kelly, a family of magic users who look human, but cannot breed with them. She is at Wild Moon Ranch in Texas with her lover Adam the vampire king of his tribe when she undergoes the Change. Normally that brings the person one paranormal power, but in her case the Change provides her with all the diverse powers her clan mates possess. This makes her the heir to the clan leader so she must leave behind her beloved vampire for a little while and heed her Great-Great Grandmother Gigi's call to head to Vancouver. Gideon, Keira's evil ex lover, is dying. Gigi asks Keira to escort him to her mother's side if they can't heal him. A Sidhe Seelie Daffyd ap Geraint accompanies them. When they are sitting in a vehicle he disappears. Only Keira heard the song which means the Sidhe called back Daffyd. In Vancouver near the entrance to Faerie an Unseelie Sidhe is killing the homeless stealing their essence. Keira and her entourage hunt down the killer as she learns more about her heritage and Gigi's plans for her include uniting with Others. This is a great urban fantasy as Maria Lima uses British Columbia to the fullest and cleverly keeps Gigi off the page until the end yet her presence seems everywhere. Gigi is a kind ruler whose strategic goal is the uniting of the paranormal species so as to end their hostilities; she believes her descendent is the key. Keira is terrific as the confused "coming of age" heroine who seems to be in ever paranormal being's crosshairs. Ms. Lima's tale is a special romantic suspense fantasy on a par with the best works of Laurel K. Hamilton and Kelly Armstrong. Harriet Klausner

A totally delightful read

This is one of those rare books that once I started reading, I could not put down. The author does a great job introducing new elements in an already overpopulated genre. The characters are interesting and not one dimensional, there is no feeling of Mary Sue-ing here as there are in so many paranormal romance books. The characters have complex relationships, when there's conflict, they work out their issues as actual adults. It's like a breath of fresh air after reading far too many books where one can almost taste the immature angst! It's also one of the few urban fantasy books I've read that has a positive gay relationship featured prominently. I really enjoyed how more and more of this universe was introduced, new aspects to familiar characters were revealed and the storytelling remained solid. Book 4 cannot come quickly enough!

Blood Kin

I have enjoyed the first two books in this series and thought Blood Kin a wonderful edition. So many surprises that I really can't discuss with out spoilers but the twists in the plot were wonderfully surprising. Keira is a fascinating character and I love watching her mature. Her relationship with Adam is a work in progress and that is very realistic to me. But here I found her relationships to be even more interesting, particularly with Nicko. There was also a wonderful use of music throughout the book. It was directly related to the plot but not overshadowing it. And going to Vancouver - absolutely loved that. Even though I have never been there, I feel like I know the city after reading Blood Kin. My only disappointment is the wait to find out what happens next. If you like Urban Fantasy, I highly recommend this book.

This series just keeps getting better

Keira Kelly has come into her powers and is now the heir apparent to the Kelly clan- a widespread family of immortals. When she is asked to return to the clan enclave in northern British Columbia, she gets as far as Vancouver before things start to get interesting. Her Sidhe cousin, Daffyd, disappears and her vampire lover, Adam, shows up in town after previously saying he couldn't go with her. Meanwhile homeless people are dying and no one quite knows why. This book is more tightly written than the previous two and blends mystery, magic, and politics into a very fine read.
