Biodiversity Conservation: The Church's Responsibility

The world today is confronted with an ecological crisis. The welfare of creation faces destruction by humans. While environmental concerns vary, the ultimate result of all is the destruction of biodiversity. Including species variety, genetic diversity and habitat health, biodiversity conservation is critical to life on Earth. This work seeks a uniquely Lutheran response. Biodiversity science, evolutionary theology and Lutheran theology, are examined to link biodiversity loss to Lutheran doctrine on the care of creation. Primary focus on the works of Martin Luther and Joseph Sittler is included. Conclusive understanding of human responsibility to respond exists, even where agreement regarding human-creation relationships diverge. Many people have lost an intimate connection with the nonhuman realm of nature. Lutherans must reinvigorate this connection through sound ecological preaching, environmentally centered study of Scripture and the sharing of eco-stories of experiencing nature in joy and celebration.

Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Sassaman was born and raised in the beauty of rural Berks County, Pennsylvania. Instilled from a very young age with a love for God and Creation he pursued the study of environmental theology after many detours. He completed his undergraduate studies in political science at the American University, followed by a Master of Divinity from the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg. After receiving his second call as pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Mertztown, Pennsylvania he completed his studies with both a Master of Sacred Theology degree and his Doctor of Ministry from the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia. He is a registered EMT and CPR Instructor as well as many other random things. He is married to Beth and has three young children, Gabriel, Anna and Tabitha.
