Futaba, a boy that has grown up in an overprotected family, suddenly finds himself on the other side of the world, where he meets Kiara, the Amaranthine. They journey to find Kiara's true master, and along the way they meet a curious cast of characters.
While this book isn't the deepest on the shelf in your local manga section, this series (at the time of writing) only has two books out, and has me totally hooked. The characters are intriguing, genuinely funny, and have so much more to tell about themselves. There's the protagonist, Futaba, a boy who's about 11 years old and thrust into a magical world. He must hit the ground running to save a girl with strong untapped powers from those who wish to take her for their own gain. The name of said girl is Kiara, who is quiet and doesn't know what's going on herself, but she does seem to hold a dark secret. First they meet Lady Belbel, a flying rabbit-like creature who is willing to look out for the children and show them the lay of the land (for the right price, of course!) The trio soon meet the Mad Prince Virid, who seems to have a split personality: one side a blood-lust lunatic, and the other a cheerful queer with a thing for Futaba who will come rushing at mere mention of his name. While it isn't a shoujo soap-opera, nor crash-smash shounen, it is lighthearted, funny, magical, cute, with just enough action, and fills me with joy when I read it. If you're tired of Fruits Basket, or are discovering the world of manga for the first time, I heartily recommend this refreshing series.
