Avery was forced to deal with his own prejudices, the unrestrained racism in the heartland of the United States, teenage suicide, love lost, and depression. After avoiding his past for over twenty-five years, Avery is finally forced to face his fears, failures, and dreams. Through Avery's memory and his experiences with his former classmates, the reader identifies with one's constant battle to understand good vs. evil, love, race relations, suffering, death, and redemption.
