Beyond Behavior
Recognizing Pain, Compensation, and the Hidden Causes of Lost Performance
What if your horse isn't being stubborn?
What if the missed lead, sudden refusal, wide turn, cinchiness, tail swishing, loss of speed, or change in attitude is actually telling you something more?
Beyond Behavior challenges horse owners to look deeper than the behavior they see on the surface.
Performance horses are incredibly skilled at compensating. They can continue to run, jump, turn, stop, collect, and compete even when something in their body has begun to change. Often, the first warning is not an obvious limp. It is a subtle shift in movement, willingness, recovery, or performance.
In this practical guide, Adam Lonkey explores how pain, restriction, weakness, compensation, training, equipment, conditioning, old injuries, and workload can all influence the way a horse behaves and performs.
You'll learn how to recognize the small changes that are easy to overlook, understand why recurring "training problems" may deserve a closer look, identify patterns in movement and behavior, and know when it is time to involve the veterinarian or another member of your horse's performance team.
This is not a book about diagnosing your horse yourself.
It is about becoming a better observer.
Because sometimes the most important thing a horse owner can say is:
"He never used to do that."
And sometimes the difference between correcting a behavior and understanding it can change everything.
Stop looking only at what your horse is doing. Start asking why.
