Between Life and Death at Camp 707
He came to America as an enemy. He never expected to leave with friends.
In 1943, German soldier Matthias Weber is captured during the brutal fighting at Hill 609 in Tunisia. He expects imprisonment, hardship, and uncertainty.
He does not expect Minnesota.
Transferred to Camp 707, a real German prisoner-of-war logging camp hidden among the forests and lakes of northern Minnesota, Matthias finds himself thousands of miles from his wife, Anna, and the daughter he has never held.
Behind the wire, the war continues to shape everything. Letters arrive months late. News from Germany grows darker. Families disappear beneath bombing raids. And as the truth of Nazi atrocities begins to emerge, Matthias must confront difficult questions about the country whose uniform he wore.
Yet beyond the fence, something unexpected begins to happen.
Logging crews become fishing trips. Guards become familiar faces. Americans who were supposed to be enemies become Carl, Bobby, and Jack. Around campfires, frozen lakes, hunting trails, and the endless Minnesota pines, the boundaries between prisoner and captor slowly begin to blur.
But when the war finally ends, Matthias discovers that peace does not mean freedom-and going home may prove harder than surviving captivity.
Inspired by the true history of Camp 707 near Deer River, Minnesota, Between Life and Death at Camp 707 is a story of war and waiting, friendship and forgiveness, family and belonging-and the unexpected humanity that can survive even between enemies.
Some wars end with surrender. Others end only when men learn how to live afterward.
