This paper attempts to provide both an overview and a nuanced picture of the key positions and lines of argument in the discourse on secure detention. As an introduction to the topic, the second chapter sets out the definition of secure accommodation, the origins and development of the discourse on secure accommodation, the legal basis for measures involving deprivation of liberty, and the development of the number of places available. The third chapter sets out the main arguments and lines of reasoning within the discourse. The concluding fourth chapter summarises my findings.
