Beginner’s CHINESE (Mandarin) with online audio Yong Ho This book is the most scaffolded book ever. The lessons are easy to follow for beginners. The layout of this book is reader/learner friendly. Yong Ho is a well-organized teacher. The text is explained perfectly. Each chapter includes sentence patterns; the conversations are in a side by side format with the characters and Chinese on the left and the English on the right. The next section includes words and expressions with the English definition. words and expressions are explained by sections of grammar functions. The following material is a section on language points. The language points provide cultural and grammatical applications. The last section includes the written practice. The lesson vocabulary is used in the written practice and there is an answer key for the questions. Lastly, the back of the book includes a glossary with simplified and traditional characters and also the lesson number for each word. I especially like the internet resources of guides, indexes, and portals. The website has audio files for practicing the four tones and pinyin used in this book and there is another file with lessons. There are many words for practice so the correct pronunciation will become easily internalized. Learning Chinese is no longer daunting. It is like sitting down to a buffet of excellently prepared gourmet language learning. I searched many beginning Chinese language books before finding this masterpiece. The online website has many resources for the target language, and he has other languages offered to learners. I am truly thankful for this author. There is a (sold separately) dictionary, and it is also well written, easy to see (font size). I bought all his books once I saw the design of "Beginner’s Chinese." This is the first book that makes learning Chinese undaunting.
