Before Number One is a collection of musical scores composed by Ralph Blauvelt before he wrote "No. 1"in the summer of 1971. Most of them had been mentioned briefly in his first book. However, From Notation To Music focused on themusic he composed between 1971 and 1981 when his musical scores assumed the characteristics of visual art works. Most of these artwork scores were pictured and fully documented in the book. Before Number One, presents the complete scores of his earlier significant compositions written under the tutelage of Vittorio Giannini, George Thadeus Jones, Nicholas Flagello, Henri Pousseur, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Lejaren Hiller. Before Number One includes multi-page, non-artwork musical Ralph composed after "No. 1" that were not fully reproduced in From Notation To Music or in his second book, Music Album. These compositions demonstrate Ralph's use of indeterminate, graphic, and text notations and are presented in the back section of the book. Before Number One can be thought of as a large addendum to his first two books. Before Number One contains descriptive comments plus excerpts from From Notation To Music and Music Album to give some background and context to the musical scores. This second edition includes additional comments and excerpts as well as unrelated anecdotes and poetry to fill the blank spaces that were on the pages of the first edition.
