Becoming Laila

By Michael Riley

Based on a True Story Born Anthony in a provincial town in the Philippines, Laila grows up knowing that the person the world sees is not the person she believes herself to be. Her search for identity eventually takes her to Manila, where hormones, beauty pageants, friendships, and a vibrant transgender community give her the courage to begin becoming Laila. But transformation comes at a price. Seeking opportunity and a life beyond the limitations of home, Laila travels to Dubai-a city where extraordinary wealth and strict social boundaries exist side by side. Beneath its glittering skyline, she is drawn into the secretive world of high-end escorting, where wealthy businessmen, powerful men, celebrities, and international travelers pay for beauty, discretion, and companionship. Behind the doors of five-star hotels and private villas, Laila experiences a Dubai few outsiders ever see. Money and luxury bring independence, but the escort world also exposes her to exploitation, discrimination, dangerous clients, complicated relationships, and the constant risk that her carefully constructed life could unravel. Becoming Laila is the true story of one woman's journey through gender, sexuality, survival, and reinvention-from a modest childhood in the Philippines to an underground world hidden behind Dubai's extravagant fa ade.
