Color photos and captions make this a must-have

I've been fascinated by the Bayeux Tapestry since the first time I saw a reference to it in some article years ago. When I did a little research on it, that made me more fascinated. Then I went to see it. Goodness. It's astounding. But no matter how long you look (and they keep the line moving along in the museum) if you really love this embroidery (and yes, it is a 70 meters-long embroidery on linen cloth, not a tapestry) you'll need more time to study the fascinating and detailed images. This book I deem wonderful because it contains color photos that in my mind reproduce the beautiful colors well. (The lighting in the museum is very subdued. The photos in this book look like what I saw in the museum. Some other books tend to be a little yellow in tone that I did not see in person.) The commentary by Danish archaeologist Mogens Rud is interesting. This slim book includes a bibliography, maps and an impressive index. Well worth the purchase price and of interest to people who are interested in English and French history, the Battle of Hastings, depictions of battle, historic embroideries, and graphic representations of events (graphic novel-lovers!) A good companion to the book The Bayeux Tapestry by Charles H. Gibbs-Smith, which has a larger format, but many photos of the tapestry in black and white rather than color.
