Bill Kinsella is not the only all-star writer in Baseball Fantastic. Gathered in this collection are baseball stories by Nebula Award winners John Kessel and George Alec Effinger, Bram Stoker Award... This description may be from another edition of this product.
W.P. Kinsella's quote on the cover says everything: "Baseball knows no limits, and the true baseball field, the foul lines diverge forever, eventually taking in most, or all of the universe." If you're into speculative/science fiction and baseball, this book offers many treats. Included are a few of Kinsella's short stories ("Fred Noonan Flying Services", "The Indestructable Hadrian Wilks"), along with stories from lesser known writers. In Ron Carlson's "Zanduce at Second," a ballplayer's foul balls regularly kill fans, while Scott Nicholson's award-winning "The Vampire Shortstop," is about, well, a vampire shortstop. John Kessel's alternate history of "The Franchise" pits George Herbert Walker Bush against a flamethrowing Castro on the baseball diamond, and is one of the many highlights in this collection. Sure, there are a few duds, but Kinsella's choices bat above .400. Highly recommended.
