The Dawn of Avatar Yangchen (The Woman Who Prevented An All-Out War)

After reading Kyoshi's story, I couldn’t resist reading Yangchen’s, The Dawn of Yangchen. It’s interesting at the beginning how Yangchen’s mind has difficulty retaining all the previous Avatars’ memories; she yells in agony. Jetsun, Yangchen’s older sister, reads to her to calm her down and leads her through the Spirit World. Years later, a waterbender named Kavik breaks into Avatar Yangchen’s Blue Manse, the temporary place she’s staying in Bin-Er, to steal information to sell. Yangchen spares Kavik when anyone else would have roughed him up a bit, like Yangchen’s sacked guards. Yangchen offers Kavik a taste of freedom and companionship. Yangchen informs Kavik that she’s surrounded by spies and double agents. She needs a skilled runner to gather information for her that is not corrupted by power and can maneuver around Bin-Er’s streets. How can Kavik refuse an Air Nomad who blackmails him? The two encounter many friends and foes on their journey, with some individuals they never thought they would see again. The people in power underestimate the young Avatar and her abilities—big mistake! When Zongdu Henshe talks of the secret weapon Unanimity, Yangchen, Kavik, and their friends must defend the world from it. Yangchen and Kavik are young adults who battle with their enemies, both physically and mentally. They are surprisingly similar in multiple ways. They share a love-hate relationship, but something comes between them in the end. Can the two rectify their relationship and prevent the battles that are sure to come? Yangchen’s work is unfinished, as I’m sure I’ll read about it in The Legacy of Yangchen. I recommend this book to Avatar: The Last Airbender fans. F.C. Yee, Michael Dante DiMartino, Bryan Konietzko, and the Avatar team wrote another fantastic story I know I will read again. I can’t wait to read the next book. Hopefully, Avatar Yangchen will fall in love with Kavik. I think they would make a cute couple. I hope F.C. Yee keeps giving us readers more Avatar stories to read.
