Apprentices in Love

Apprentices in Love is a true primer for Christians. Hardly old-fashioned in expression or outlook, it is written in terms of those timeless basics of faith and practice that Fr. Gibbard knows to be essential to all men everywhere. It is not uncommon today to see people searching for God - or at least some ultimate Being - in unlikely places and by curious means. Even regular church-goers have their times of doubting when the old ways of praying, Bible reading, and attendance at public worship seem to yield little that is meaningful or satisfying. Fr. Gibbard knows these dificulties; he has been through them himself. His conclusaion is that it is in those very needs and anxieties experienced by us that we find the redeeming love of God that enables us to be truly human and truly loving ourselves. Christ is the first and, so far, only fully realized human being. By experiencing Him in our lives in sacrament, prayer, and study, we can come close to the full joy, the satisfaction, of the life God intends for us. Through simple suggestions and clear examples, Fr. Gibbard guides us to those practices which, if persued regularly, will most readily yield results in Christian living and loving. Each of us is, as the author quotes from St. Francis de Sales, "a mere apprentice," and only by learning and refining the skills of our trade as Christians, shall we become masters of the art. --- from book's dustjacket
