Scientific knowledge for the layperson

Dr. Clouatre gives you all the facts on the nutritional science behind the various reasons different people get fat and/or stay fat--but he puts it into plain, easy-to-understand language. He explains how "food couplings," vitamins, minerals and basic food nutrients (like amino acids vs. fatty acids) affect my body. This book helps the aging 30 or 40 something learn how to feel and look 20 again! Visiting a place like Puritan's Pride [...] saves you money when you finish this book--you'll want to go out and buy everything Dr. Clouatre recommends!! He focuses on GETTING LEAN, not losing weight, and if your goal is to be healthy, you NEED this book!

Amazing Diet

After following the diet in this book I lost 43 pounds. The diet allows you to eat a lot of food and is easier to follow that stictly protein diets because you never totally feel deprived. You can have a little of every food type, just not together. I was able to stick to it for an extended period of time (about 1 1/2 years) and eat more food than I can normally eat. Unlike low fat diets (which sometimes caused a weight gain) this diet was painless and I never felt hungry. I supplemented with vitamins, but did not use all the supplements listed. It was the diet, and the addition of healthy oil to my diet that worked for me. The book was brief and easy to read. The diet was simple to follow. The biochemical information was valuable.

Caveat Emptor on Arginine

On page 12 of this overall good book, the author mentions that excess arginine and ornithine may activate a previously dormant herpes virus. I inferred from this generality that she meant herpes simplex, or genital herpes, which is prone to frequent outbreaks. What she did not specify, was that any of the billions of persons who have had chicken pox as a child could have an oubreak of the same herpes zoster virus as shingles, an extremely painful condition with a potential for debilitating neuralgic pain for months or years after the skin eruption. Everyone who has had chicken pox is a candidate, and a high arginine environment is just what encourages the virus to come out of decades of dormancy. So, be careful, take the Lysine, or red marine algae, which suppresses both herpes simplex and zoster. Or skip the arginine. I'm sitting here barely able to walk from back pain so severe after a shingles outbreak from, you guessed it, taking large amounts of argininge at bedtime for GH releaser benefit. Don't let the law of unintended consequences affect your life! Who wants to thin, but in chronic pain?
