An English Pilgrim: Discovering England's Ancient Ways

By Luke Sherlock

An evocative and deeply personal reflection on the pilgrimage routes to be found across England by Luke Sherlock, author of the award-winning Forgotten Churches.

Pilgrimage is a rich, varied, and ancient practice, and one with a renewed sense of interest and relevance in our increasingly distracted age. The act of undertaking a contemplative journey--whether tracing a well-trodden pilgrim path or piecing together our own personal maps of meaning--can afford an immensely valuable sense of perspective and discovery.

In An English Pilgrim Luke Sherlock documents some of his many pilgrimages, immersing himself in famed historic pilgrim destinations, as well as taking us through landscapes where he has sought his own sense of solace and wonder. Along the way he introduces some of England's most iconic locations, speaks to those who are quietly upholding the traditions of pilgrimage, and explores the lessons these journeys can provide in an age of accelerating noise and distraction.

Accompanied by evocative illustrations from Ioana Pioaru, this is an immersive exploration of England's pilgrim past, present and future--perfect for hikers, lovers of the English countryside, and those seeking a slower, more intentional way of engaging with the world.

An English Pilgrim is both an invitation to journey along England's ancient ways and a unique meditation on landscape, history, and tradition.
